Margaret River is about 270 km south of Perth, roughly three hours on the Kwinana Freeway, Forrest Highway and Bussell Highway. The drive itself is easy; the reason to take your time is what you find at the end: surf beaches, limestone caves, tall karri forests and more than a hundred wineries.

1The Route

From Perth, follow the Kwinana Freeway south to Mandurah and onto the Forrest Highway, which runs fast and straight to Bunbury. The Bussell Highway continues to Busselton and Margaret River. Caves Road, which runs parallel closer to the coast, links the beaches, caves and wineries between Dunsborough and Augusta.

Tip

Caves Road is narrow, winding and busy with winery traffic. Drive slowly, and choose a designated driver for tastings.

3Wineries, Caves and Beaches

Wineries

The Margaret River region has more than a hundred cellar doors, many along Caves Road and in Wilyabrup and Yallingup. Tastings are spread out, so plan a designated driver or a tour.

Caves

Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave, Ngilgi Cave and Jewel Cave each show a different side of the limestone ridge. All are reached on sealed roads.

Beaches

Surfers Point, Gnarabup, Injidup and Smiths Beach are popular; swim only where conditions are safe, as many beaches have strong rips.
