2Which Car for Tropical Queensland?

Compact car

Fine for Cairns, the Northern Beaches and Port Douglas.

Compact SUV or SUV

Better on the steep Gillies and Kuranda ranges up to the Tablelands, and for the drive to Cape Tribulation.

4WD

Only needed for permitted unsealed roads. The Bloomfield Track north of Cape Tribulation is 4WD-only and excluded by almost all rental agreements.

Convertible

The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of Australia’s great coastal drives.

3Driving in the Tropics

  • The wet season (about November to April) brings heavy rain and flooding. Check QLDTraffic and never cross flooded roads.
  • Ask whether your rental can use the Daintree River cable ferry before you plan Cape Tribulation.
  • Watch for cassowaries on rainforest roads, especially around Mission Beach and the Daintree.
  • Never swim where crocodile warnings are posted.

6Choosing Between On-Airport and Off-Airport in Cairns

In 2025 data, Cairns Airport pick-ups averaged about A$125 a day and off-airport depots about A$84. Off-airport companies (Bargain, East Coast and Everything Fleet) run free shuttles from depots about five minutes south of the airport, with set hours: for example, Bargain’s shuttle runs Monday to Friday 7am–6:40pm and weekends 8am–4:40pm, and Everything Fleet’s daily from 7am to 10pm. If your flight lands outside those hours, book an on-airport desk.

  • Port Douglas: paid and time-limited parking near Four Mile Beach and the marina in busy months.
  • Mossman Gorge: visitors park at the Mossman Gorge Centre and take the shuttle bus to the gorge.
  • Kuranda: village car parks fill on market days.
  • Cape Tribulation: small car parks at boardwalks; arrive early in the dry season.
