Sydney Airport (SYD) has two terminal precincts on opposite sides of the runway: T1 for international flights and T2/T3 for domestic flights. Most international brands have desks in both, while value brands run free shuttles to depots in nearby Mascot.

Here is where to find your car, where to return it and how to handle Sydney’s tolls.

1Picking Up at T1 International

After customs, the on-airport rental desks are between Arrivals Hall A and B. Cars are collected from the P7 car park, a short walk from the terminal. Allow at least an hour after landing to clear immigration and collect bags, and longer if you do not hold an Australian passport.

2Picking Up at T2 and T3 Domestic

Desks are in the arrivals areas of both domestic terminals. Which terminal you use depends on your airline. Some suppliers return cars to nearby streets in Mascot, as below.

3Off-Airport Suppliers

Value brands do not have terminal desks. You call or check in, then take a free shuttle to the depot. Shuttle bays differ by terminal:

4Returning the Car

  • T1: follow signs for “Car Rental Returns” to the P7 car park.
  • T2/T3: Avis, Budget, Dollar, Europcar and Redspot return on Keith Smith Avenue; Hertz and Thrifty at 48 Ross Smith Avenue; Sixt at Level P1, 336–338 King Street, Mascot, with shuttles to the terminals.
  • Allow 30 minutes for an on-airport return and an hour for off-airport, plus two hours before domestic and three before international flights.
  • Refuel nearby beforehand; refuelling charges are high.

5Getting Out of the Airport

  • To the city: via the Eastern Distributor (tolled) or Southern Cross Drive, about 20–30 minutes outside peak times.
  • To the north shore and Northern Beaches: through the city and across the Harbour Bridge or Tunnel (tolled southbound).
  • To the west and Blue Mountains: via the M5 and WestConnex or M4 (tolled), about 1.5–2 hours to Katoomba.
  • To the south and Wollongong: via the Princes Highway or M1, about 1.5 hours to Wollongong.

7Arriving on an International Flight: Step by Step

  • 1. Clear immigration, collect bags and pass biosecurity. Allow at least an hour, longer at busy times.
  • 2. If you booked an off-airport supplier, call them now so the shuttle is on its way.
  • 3. For on-airport suppliers, go to the desks between Arrivals Hall A and B.
  • 4. Show your licence (and IDP or translation if needed), passport, credit card and voucher.
  • 5. Inspect the car in the P7 car park and photograph any damage before leaving.
  • 6. Set your navigation before you drive out; the airport road system is busy.

8Leaving the Airport and Tolls

Most routes from the airport use toll roads: the Eastern Distributor and Harbour Tunnel or Bridge to the north, and the M5 or WestConnex to the west and south. All tolls are electronic. The rental company’s e-tag records them, and you are charged afterwards with an admin fee.

Tip

Peak traffic around the airport is roughly 07:30–09:30 and 16:30–18:00 on weekdays. Plan returns outside those times if you can.
